This Week 01
Charlie Munger, Le Labo, Midjourney, Ralph Lauren, Brunello Cucinelli
Whaddup.
I’m going to try sticking with this.
The things I’ve consumed throughout the week.
Shared with you.
Documented forever.
Let’s get started.
Books I’m reading
I’ve been on a Charlie Munger kick since I listened to the amazing Founders episode David Senra did on him. Charlie is Warren Buffet’s business partner. His pithy aphorisms and sharp wit are new to me and I’m soaking them in by reading from the book, Poor Charlie’s Almanack. By the way, I really recommend clicking that link if you like incredible looking websites. A digital version of the book is free on there, too.
The book is divided into the talks and letters Charlie composed throughout his life. It’s first talk, Charlie’s Harvard School Commencement Speech, is a fun one as he’s telling you how to be miserable, so long as that’s your goal.
First, be unreliable. Do not faithfully do what you have engaged to do. If you will only master this one habit, you will more than counterbalance the combined effect of all your virtues, howsoever great. If you like being distrusted and excluded from the best human contribution and company, this prescription is for you. Master this one habit, and you will always play the role of the hare in the fable, except that instead of being outrun by one fine turtle, you will be outrun by hordes and hordes of mediocre turtles, and even some mediocre turtles on crutches.
Things I’m buying
My grandfather owned a chain of fragrance stores around Miami called Splash Perfumes. I got together with him for lunch recently and he told me all about his starting of the business. Here’s an old picture of his store in Sawgrass Mall.
The business lasted for decades until he was forced to liquidate his assets in the mid 2010s because of increasing rents.
Now I find myself getting into fragrances on my own and I’m searching for my own signature scent. I’m really into Le Labo’s design and overall aesthetic. They’re a French company creating really unique scents like their extremely popular Santal 33, a leathery, and some might say pickle-y, scent I can’t say I’d wear on a daily basis.
I did find the right one for me though, so I picked up a 15ml size of the Thé Matcha on a trip to Austin, TX.
